Tor Marancia

πŸ“ Context

The Tor Marancia Condominium Museum is located at Viale di Tor Marancia 63 (00147 Rome).
Within the public housing complex built in 1947, the project has transformed eleven buildings into an open-air museum, thanks to the addition of 22 monumental murals created by Italian and international artists.

🎨 The project3

The project, called Big City Life, was conceived in 2013 and implemented between 2014 and 2015.
The objective: to restore identity and vitality to the neighbourhood by initiating a dialogue between art, urban planning and the local community.

πŸ–ΌοΈ The works

The external surfaces of the buildings have become giant canvases, each work measuring approximately 10Γ—14.5 metres (in many cases) and telling stories of life, memory and urban transformation.
Some famous examples:

  • Il peso della storia (2014) by Jaz: depicts two wrestlers – symbolising the link between Argentina (the artist’s country) and Italy.

  • Seth’s The Redeemer Child (2015): a child on a colourful staircase looking out over the buildings, in memory of a young resident of the complex.

  • Our Lady of Shanghai (2015) by Mr Klevra: a contemporary reinterpretation of Byzantine sacred iconography linked to the history of the neighbourhood.

Impacts and meanings

  • The condominium museum is not just a repository for works of art: it is a participatory urban laboratory, in which tenants, local associations and artists have actively collaborated.
